The Grapevine Plantations of Attica
It is in the area of Mesogea, over the eastern side of Attica, that the
heart of the Attican vine beats. Regarded as the driest, warm
climate vines throughout Greece, vineyards of Attica have thrived
in the specific area since antiquity. A drought tolerant variety, the
Savatiano is capable of standing high temperatures but it also
possesses the ability to adopt to various soil conditions. It seems
that the particular variety has been in perfect harmony both with
the local climate and topography.
The evident soil differences along with the microclimate in the
areas of Peania, Spata, Kantza, Pikermi, Palini, Rafina, Koropi,
Keratea and Markopoulo provide grapevines with distinct
characteristics. Hard work and several years of research have paid
off as viticulturists have eventually managed to decode and elevate
the Attican vine terroir offering a multitude of outstanding, rare
nature Savatiano depending on the particular locality of
cultivation.
Therefore, we can now refer to a range of new generation of
Savatiano wines. They derive from limited yield, non-irrigated
grapevines whose average age is around 50 years. Harvested in the
right time of their ripening process and vinified with up-to-date
techniques, the Savatiano variety wines are marked for their aging
potential, exceptional acidity, aromatic intensity and palatable
richness.
